Colonial Spanish horses at The Center for America's First Horse in Johnson Vermont

The Center for America’s First Horse offers relationship experiences with Colonial Spanish horses to enrich the lives of people of all ages and financial circumstances. We serve the Lamoille and neighboring counties, as well as horse enthusiasts living outside of the region. Through education and public awareness we are committed to the conservation efforts of this rare and historic breed.

The Colonial Spanish horse, like the buffalo, has served many of America's native tribes for centuries, and is now close to extinction. Today, the value of these horses to the human family goes way beyond their epic history, intelligence, and natural beauty. They are the true teachers.

Through interaction with our Colonial Spanish horses, people have experienced personal growth and development of life and leadership skills, while being guided in a positive and professional setting. These opportunities are available to anyone who chooses to commit themselves to learning.

Services we provide include individual and group workshops in all aspects of instruction, care and training of the horse. Our herd of Colonial Spanish horses are experienced working with individuals who have been considered at-risk and those with emotional challenges. The Center offers volunteer opportunities and has professional relationships within the community, offering work study programs.

The Center for America’s First horse is being structured as a non profit organization under 501(c) (3) status with our acceptance anticipated in 2011. We are seeking funds through grants, fundraising events and donations to continue our important work for the horses and the community.
