Our Programs
Through dedication and a vision for the future,The Center for America's First Horse, Inc. is providing life enriching experiences and programs for people of all ages and aptitudes.
The concept for The Center for America's First Horse, Inc. was the vision of founder, Stephanie Lockhart. Her years of experience in the horse industry and passion for saving the Spanish mustang led her to bring together a group of dynamic professionals from the region to form the Board of Directors. Together, they develop creative programs and plan for the future of The Center.

The purpose of The Center for America's First Horse, Inc. is to develop and carry out programs which support life enrichment inspired by native horses.
Education and Public Awareness: Events and activities that reach a broad spectrum of the general public is a key factor in fulfilling our mission. With knowledge, information and resources to share we foster an appreciation of the Spanish mustang in others. We travel extensively with our horses throughout the year.
Natural Horsemanship: Philosophy and techniques are the foundation of our work with horses and people. Through many of our offered experiential learning programs, important life skills such as leadership, communication, building confidence and self esteem can be gained from interaction with the horses at The Center.

"The board development/leadership workshop I attended with the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum’s Board of Directors helped us to learn more about how we individually and collectively function and problem solve through unique encounters with horses. This insight will be invaluable in creating more collaboration, transparency, and respect as the Board plans for the Museum’s second decade. Thank you to the Center for America’s First Horse for offering us this eye-opening opportunity." Meredith Scott, Director/Curator
Outreach programs: Partnering with schools, state agencies, and communities around the region, we are bringing people together with this breed. Our work with Johnson State College, Vocational Rehabilitation, People's Academy and others, provides opportunities for the community to directly benefit from or organization.
Rescue and Placement: The Spanish mustang is perilously close to extinction. It is critical that each one have the chance to be saved, and honored. Occasionally, we find individual horses that face a dim future. With continued financial support, we can provide that horse with a safe home, rehabilitation and placement, if necessary.
Genetic Conservation : In our future, a breeding program will be launched to preserve specific strains and bloodlines near extinction. Only through research, and selective and responsible breeding practices can the rarest strains be protected for the next generations. Our contribution is to add the highest quality Spanish mustangs to the existing gene pools.
